How should I care for jewelry?

We are a family business that passes down jewelry-making secrets from generation to generation, and we strive to offer customers unique, high-quality jewelry. With simple, basic care, you can help preserve and protect your jewelry for many years. Over time, jewelry can become a family heirloom passed down through generations, but it must be cared for properly. Dust, pollution, and everyday wear can cause diamonds and other precious and semi-precious stones to lose their sparkle. The surfaces of gold, silver, and brass items can also accumulate dirt and lose their shine. Earrings worn for a long time may break at the clasp if you sleep or bathe with them on, and stone settings may loosen, causing stones to fall out.

auksosala.lt offers only 925 sterling silver items; in many cases, silver jewelry is rhodium-plated, which provides even more shine. Silver is a precious metal and occasionally requires professional cleaning. Silver tends to oxidize, meaning items may blacken over time. Silver jewelry is affected by air and light, so when not worn, it is recommended to store it in the dark, in jewelry boxes. Silver is also not resistant to perfumes and household chemicals, so when doing housework, cooking, or bathing, it is recommended not to wear jewelry, as items may get scratched. Non-rhodium-plated silver items may yellow over time, so in both cases we recommend taking the items to a jeweler for ultrasonic cleaning and polishing. You can also purchase cleaning cloths at any jewelry store and clean silver jewelry at home. Silver is especially affected by salty liquids, so sometimes a reaction with the body (especially sweat) is possible. In such cases, black marks may remain on the skin as the jewelry begins to tarnish. If you purchased intentionally oxidized silver jewelry, avoid cleaning it too much, as you may rub off the intentionally darkened areas.

Gold jewelry should be cleaned with non-abrasive cleaners. Always check that stones are secure and that clasps are not damaged. Protect gold jewelry from household chemicals and perfumes, as contact may change the color of the gold and may cause cracking. Gold is a soft metal, so it may get scratched over time.

Jewelry with gemstones requires special care. Avoid contact with sharp or angular surfaces. Even diamonds can chip if dropped onto any surface at a certain angle. Most stones—including amethyst, emerald, ruby, opal, pearls, tanzanite, tourmaline, zultanite, etc.—are very delicate and can be easily damaged. Enamel can also be damaged if caught on something. Stones can scratch other stones, so jewelry should be stored separately. Extreme temperature changes, perfumes, cosmetics, ultrasonic baths, and household chemicals can also damage gemstone jewelry. To clean diamonds, use a gentle solution made of six parts water and one part ammonia and apply it with a very soft brush. Pearls worn often should be professionally cleaned once a year. Between professional cleanings, you can gently wipe pearls with a damp cloth. More information about jewelry care can be found here.

How should I store silver jewelry when I’m not wearing it?

Store silver jewelry in a dry place. If you wear the item often, keep it as dark as possible and protect it from excessive light and air. The material of jewelry boxes helps protect items from tarnishing. If you live in a humid climate or room, be sure to add a moisture-absorbing pouch with crystals into the box. Avoid contact with rubber products. Sulfur found in rubber products causes silver tarnishing and corrosion. Read more about silver here.

How should I care for intentionally oxidized silver items?

Oxidized silver items are intentionally darkened to create an antique look. Due to this special darkening, their care differs from regular silver items. Avoid silver polishing products, as they will remove the darkening from the item. Clean blackened/oxidized items with a dry, clean cloth to avoid scratching. Clean darkened silver only when necessary.

What should I do if an item breaks?

If your jewelry item breaks, please contact us by email at info@auksosala.lt and attach a photo of the item and the tag (both sides). We handle each case individually and aim to find a solution. All claims are reviewed in accordance with the law within 14 calendar days.

How often should jewelry made of precious metals be cleaned?

It is recommended to take jewelry to a professional at least once a year. Frequently worn jewelry should be cleaned every few months—especially engagement rings with diamonds.

How often should silver jewelry be polished?

Silver items are polished to restore their shine. Polishing should be done only a few times throughout the life of the piece, because polishing removes a small layer of metal.

How should I store jewelry when I’m not wearing it?

It is very important to store unworn jewelry correctly while traveling, carrying it in a handbag, or storing it at home. Jewelry should be kept in jewelry boxes, protected from moisture and light, and you should not store two or more pieces in the same box, as they can scratch each other and chains can tangle. Frequently worn items should be kept in special jewelry boxes with separate compartments for each piece, made of materials that help prevent tarnishing. Jewelry must be protected from contact with air and light. When traveling, it is important to keep jewelry organized and safe. If traveling with several pieces, place them in separate compartments to prevent damage and tangling. Make sure jewelry is not stored together with clothing, as jewelry can damage clothes and vice versa. It is recommended to wear valuable jewelry on your person, as luggage can get lost during travel.

Are precious metal jewelry items water-resistant?

It is recommended to protect most jewelry from contact with water, as there is a risk of minor damage. Jewelry should always be removed when doing housework, using household chemicals, cooking, exercising, doing garden work, showering or bathing, swimming in pools, lakes, etc., and when using body lotions/creams, hair products, perfumes, and other cosmetics.

How should I care for jewelry with diamonds?

Dust, pollution, and everyday wear affect diamonds and other precious stones—they can lose their brilliance and become covered with a dull film. We recommend taking diamond jewelry to a professional jeweler once a year for professional cleaning. Between professional cleanings, we recommend purchasing a non-abrasive cleaner intended for diamonds and caring for them at home.

How should I care for jewelry with gemstones?

Jewelry with stones requires special care. Avoid contact with sharp, angular surfaces. How should I care for pearl jewelry?

Cultured pearls with a thick nacre layer will adorn you for many years if cared for properly. Cultured pearls should be protected from perfumes, cosmetics, sweat, and dirt. You can gently wipe pearls with a slightly damp cloth. Pearls sold on auksosala.lt are strung on silk thread with knots between the pearls. Over time, silk stretches, weakens, and becomes dirty. If you wear pearl necklaces very often, we recommend cleaning pearls annually and having them restrung by a professional.

If your chain breaks, please contact us by email at info@auksosala.lt and attach a photo of the item and the tag (both sides). We handle each case individually and aim to find a solution. All claims are reviewed in accordance with the law within 14 calendar days.

Can a chain be shortened or extended?

Is it possible to replace a lost earring or cufflink with the same one?

We do not sell single earrings or cufflinks separately, but we can help you find the same model. Please contact us by phone +370 609 72 236, by email at info@auksosala.lt, or leave a message in the chat box at the bottom right of the website.

How do I clean gold jewelry?

Gold jewelry should be cleaned with non-abrasive cleaners. Always check that stones are secure and that clasps are not damaged. Protect gold jewelry from household chemicals and perfumes, as contact may change the color of the gold and may cause cracking. Gold is a soft metal, so it can get scratched over time—if that happens, take the item to a professional for polishing.

Does gold tarnish/turn black?

Gold items may darken and get scratched over time. To preserve the shine of gold jewelry, avoid contact with household chemicals, as they can instantly change the color of gold and may cause cracking. Gold jewelry should also be removed when doing household and garden work, showering or bathing, swimming in a pool, lake, or other body of water, using lotions, creams, perfumes, and other cosmetics, exercising, and cooking.

How can I remove scratches from gold jewelry?

Scratches can only be removed by polishing. On the other hand, the patina formed from scratches over time can add a unique charm to jewelry, reflecting the life of the piece. Polishing removes a small amount of metal, so it is recommended to do it only a few times over the lifetime of the jewelry.

How should I polish gold jewelry?

We recommend entrusting polishing only to a professional. Please contact your jeweler, who will take care of your gold item.

Green/dark stains appeared on my skin from gold—what does this mean?

Rose gold alloys contain copper, which under certain conditions can leave residue—i.e., the metal reacts with sweat and fatty acids in the skin, which promotes corrosion and leaves marks on the skin. Marks may also appear from other gold colors if you do not remove jewelry when bathing, using body creams, shower gel, and other perfumery products. In such cases, the precious metal wears off on the skin and leaves metal particles. The metal also wears and reacts with natural body oils and other bodily fluids.

When visiting Aukso Sala physical stores, you will be assisted by professional consultants who will help you choose the diamond jewelry that best meets your expectations. Which C is the most important when buying diamonds?

The 4C system consists of color, clarity, cut, and carat weight. It is a globally recognized standard for evaluating diamond quality. Diamond quality depends on all four characteristics, but we believe that the most important factor is cut. Among all four Cs, cut most strongly determines how brilliantly a diamond will sparkle in light. A poorly cut diamond will not shine, even if its color and clarity are of high grade. Learn more about the 4C system here.

Will I receive a certificate when purchasing jewelry with diamonds?

Yes, all products with diamonds and precious stones sold by auksosala.lt are hallmarked and certified by the Lithuanian or Latvian Assay Offices. The certificate confirms the authenticity of the diamonds and indicates their weight, color, clarity, and cut.
