What is the difference between a diamond and a brilliant?

A diamond is a mineral, while a brilliant is a diamond cut in the round brilliant style. Therefore, not every diamond is a brilliant. Diamonds can also have oval, pear, princess, emerald and other cut shapes.

What do the 4Cs of a diamond mean?

Diamonds are often evaluated using four characteristics known as the 4Cs: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight. No single characteristic is universally the most important. Their significance depends on the size and shape of the diamonds, the earring design and the buyer’s priorities.

Cut describes a diamond’s proportions, symmetry and polish. These factors influence how the stone interacts with light. A cut-quality grade is generally provided for round brilliant diamonds when it has been assessed and stated.

Colour may be graded on the D–Z scale, with D representing the colourless end of the scale. A more noticeable yellow or brown tint may appear towards Z. A later letter does not automatically mean that a diamond is “bad”; different tones may be selected according to the design and budget.

Clarity describes internal inclusions and external characteristics. Clarity grades may range from FL to I, although an individual clarity grade may not always be stated separately for every small diamond.

Carat weight measures weight rather than physical dimensions. One carat equals 0.2 grams. An earring description may state the weight of one diamond or the total weight of all diamonds in the pair, so check what the stated figure represents.

How to choose a diamond setting

The setting is part of both the construction and design of diamond earrings. Different settings can present the same stone in different ways, so consider both appearance and construction.

In a prong setting, the stone is held by several metal prongs. In a bezel setting, metal surrounds the edge of the stone. In a halo design, smaller stones surround a central stone. Other setting styles may also be used, so check the selected product photographs and description.

Which gold colour should you choose?
